Limousin
At about 450 km. from Paris direction Toulouse there is a relatively unknown and unspoiled part of France: The Limousin.
The capital city is Limoges about 200 years old in the heart of the department Haute-Vienne. 35 km. west of Limoges is situated Oradour sur Vayres in the National Régional Parc Périgord-Limousin, the land of the Feuillardiers.
The Limousin has much to offer to nature, art and culture lovers.
The hilly landscape consists of meadows, rivers, forests and lakes. There are walking paths for about 1800 km.,amongst the GR4. The many rivers and lakes in this region is a lively pleasure for swimmers and fishermen. It's a few minutes walk from Domaine des Chapelles to the nearest river the Tardoire, where it is possible to fish (with a valid fishinglicense, to be obtained in Oradour sur Vayres).
The region counts three golf courses: Golf Municipal in Limoges, Golf de la Porcelaine in Panazol and Golf de Saint-Junien in Saint-Junien (Dutch Management).
Limoges
Limoges the porcelain city, has in the towncentre the quarter "La Boucherie", where since the middle ages the butchers have their typical houses and shops. Next to it is the "Halles", the covered marketplace.
The other historical site is "La Cité", the quarter around the old Cathedral Saint-Etienne. Many small streets, places, arcades, typical houses and caves, shops and restaurants.
You can visit the National Porcelain Museum, the aquarium and several beautiful public gardens.
Surrounding Domaine des Chapelles
Oradour sur Vayres is situated in the "Pays des Feuillardiers", craftsmen who worked with the branches of the chestnuttrees. They made rings for wine barrels, fences, baskets and cabins. In the "Maison du Chataignier" in Chalus there is a exhibition specially for these crafts.
If you are interested in cultural and historical heritance you will not be disappointed.
The route "Richard Lionheart" goes past old castles, like Coussac-Bonneval, Montbrun and Chalus, where he was killed in 1199.
About 214 million years ago there was an impact of a meteorite. In Rochechouart you can visit a Museum about this impact: Espace Méteorite. In the Rochechouart Castle is a Museum for Contemporary Art.
